Interview with Andrew Bonneau

In this video, Emilio Longo interviews Australian realist painter, Andrew Bonneau. Andrew begun his training at the National Art School in Sydney where he completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting. Eager to learn more about traditionally aligned practices to drawing and painting, he took part-time classes at The Charlie Sheard Studio School and the Julian Ashton Art School also in Sydney, where he was introduced to historical painting applications and drawing methods based on time honoured skills of the past. Andrew also completed the full-time program at Grand Central Atelier in New York, in which he refined his craft in academic drawing, painting and anatomy. Topics discussed include, Andrew’s journey from being a young art student in Sydney to having one of his portraits selected as a finalist in the Archibald Prize and being awarded the William Fletcher Fellowship Rome residency that saw him staying as a fellow at the British School at Rome, which has helped establish him as a nationally recognised traditional realist painter in Australia and abroad. Conversation also focuses on Andrew’s approach to drawing and painting, and the ideas and influences behind his works, as well as his newly developed tool for painters, The Apollo Paint Carrier.
