Interview with Steven Levin

This video features an interview with artist, Steven Levin. A Minnesotan born, traditionally trained, Classical Realist painter, Steven has been among the most productive artists of the Classical Realism tradition who has remained true to the movement’s impeccably high standards of craftsmanship, whilst working with subject matter that firmly grounds his work in the twenty-first century. Steven’s formal art training begun in 1982 at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design where his keen interests in learning the traditional craft of drawing and painting were curtailed due to the insufficiency of the provided training. In 1983, Steven commenced the full-time program at Atelier LeSueur, after taking classes at Atelier Lack with George Herman. Through his exposure to these studio-schools, Steven was introduced to the rigours of academic training and the brilliancy of Impressionist colour. During his sixth year at Atelier LeSueur, Steven completed the imaginative painting course that was taught by Richard Lack. After completing his training at Atelier LeSueur, Steven remained as an instructor for an additional seven years. He began exhibiting his work with galleries starting in 1987, and after 1996 he exhibited mainly with the John Pence Gallery of San Francisco. Steven was also an active member of the American Society of Classical Realism between 1991-2005.

Steven’s compelling still lifes and contemplative interior/exterior genre paintings have become a trademark of his aesthetic which sets his work apart from other painters within the Classical Realist tradition. Today, Steven lives with his wife Erin, in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he continues to refine his craft within his home studio.
