Demonstration with Ted Dansey

In this video, Australian realist watercolourist, Ted Dansey demonstrates painting an urban landscape in the studio using a field study previously painted en plein air. Ted’s methodology is broken down into an easy to follow, step-by-step approach which includes initial underdrawing that expands on pictorial composition and design, to massing in washes which give the illusion of atmospheric perspective and depth of field. Throughout completion of the painting, Ted also discusses the manipulability and challenges of the watercolour medium and working from a painted study, elaborating on working from light to dark, taking into consideration drying time and brush selection and strokes, as well as determining when a painting is resolved.
